This second issue of Journal Gobanimo, and the first to appear in print,interrogates the intersecting lines of power, politics, and belonging across Somali histories, cultures, and futures. From the political economy of ports to gendered class relations in precolonial Somalia, the issue unpacks the legacies of colonialism, nationalism, and religious authority. Essays include a critical biography of Shaykh Muḥammad Maʿallim Ḥasan and his reconfiguration of Islamic knowledge, an analysis of diaspora identity through dress, and a comparative study of Sayyid Muhammad Abdullah Hassan’s contested image. A newly translated 1970s article by Rashiid Gadhweyne explores the revolutionary role of art, while a photo essay reflects on Somali modernity in the West. Together, these contributions challenge static notions of authenticity and invite us to reflect on how contestations of power help shape our identities.
